Lincoln Memorial
Location Highlights
- A marble colonnade with deep shade and strong verticals
- Steps looking east down the Reflecting Pool
- The Washington Monument on axis behind you
- Floodlit after dark for a completely different look
- Steps from the Mall's other memorials
- Scale no smaller landmark can match

The Lincoln Memorial is the most photographed backdrop in the city and still worth it, because scale like this cannot be faked. The colonnade gives you deep shade and hard verticals, the steps give you height and a view straight down the Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument, and the marble glows at sunrise. The catch is that everyone else knows all of this too, which makes it a first-light location if you want the steps to yourselves.

Georgetown
Location Highlights
- The first mile of the C&O Canal towpath and its bridges
- Cady's Alley, more European than American
- Georgetown Waterfront Park on the Potomac
- Cobblestone streets and painted rowhouses
- The Key Bridge upstream for a wider frame
- Sunset over the river to finish on
Plus more - view details for the full rundown.
Georgetown fits more variety into walking distance than any other neighbourhood in the city. The first mile of the C&O Canal gives you tree-lined towpath, low bridges and still water; Cady's Alley reads more European than American; the waterfront park opens onto the Potomac with the Key Bridge upstream; and the streets between them are brick, ironwork and painted rowhouses the whole way. Georgetown's own visitor guide sends couples to those three in particular, and they hold up.

Oatlands Historic House and Gardens
Location Highlights
- A four acre English terraced garden dropping in levels away from the house
- Boxwood hedges and allees with two centuries of growth behind them
- A restored propagation greenhouse from about 1810, the oldest in the country
- Early 1800s brick dependencies grouped around the mansion
- The columned front of the house, with its restored balustrade and Victorian fence
- A walled section of the garden that reads as enclosed and private
- Open Loudoun County farmland beyond the garden walls
- Mature specimen trees across the lawns

Oatlands sits on Loudoun County countryside five miles south of Leesburg, and the part you photograph is concentrated: a four acre English terraced garden falling away from an early 1800s mansion, hedged in boxwood two centuries old. Each level of the terracing sits at a different height, so one frame holds foreground, middle distance and depth, and past the hedges the land opens into Virginia horse country. Founded in 1798 as a plantation and a site of enslavement, Oatlands interprets that history openly, so read their account first.
